Often missing a tooth in the visible aesthetic area can impact on a person’s confidence whilst speaking and smiling. Even when a tooth that is not visible is missing it can cause problems when chewing and have a negative effect on the adjacent teeth. One effect it can have is to cause the adjacent teeth to move and also create new places for plaque and tarter to build up.
Loose dentures can also affect your confidence and cause difficulty with chewing and your choice of foods. Having a dental implant may help with all of the above.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are small titanium screws that act as an artificial tooth root and provides you with a stable foundation for a crown, bridge or denture. Also an implant can help to preserve healthy adjacent teeth as it eliminates the need to grind them down for the placement of a bridge. Dental implants look, feel and function like natural teeth and they enable you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.
What is the process?
Initially you will require a full examination and discussion with Mr Dhesi. The jaw will be x-rayed (if no recent x-rays are available) to check the condition of the bone and to determine the placement of the dental implant. Photographs will also be taken as part of the treatment planning. In some cases a 3D CBCT is required this is a detailed scan of the jaw. Once all the information has been gathered you will be presented with a full report along with treatment options and given the opportunity to ask Mr Dhesi any questions you may have.
If a tooth is required to be extracted prior to implant placement, a healing period of 3-6 months is likely to be required depending upon levels of infection. If there is sufficient bone levels for implant placement, an implant can be placed. If this is not the case grafting procedures maybe required, they can occur at the stage of implant placement or at a separate stage depending upon suitability. A separate grafting stage will require a period of healing usually 4-6 months before implant placement. All surgery is carried out by Mark Willings our implant surgeon.
When the healing process following implant placement is complete Mr Dhesi will take impressions to have the crown/bridge/denture made once that process is complete he will be able to attach it to the implant.
We would also carry out a review appointment to check the aesthetics and functionality of the implant
