Top Tips for Looking after your Children's Teeth

February 27, 2017

When should I first bring my child to the dentist?  Is a question we get asked all the time, as soon as their first tooth erupts or around six months old. This will get them used to the environment and give you as a parent the opportunity to ask the dentist for any advice on how to best look after your child's teeth.

Today we are going to share with you some top tips on looking after your children's teeth.

  • Start to brush your child's teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts; use a toothbrush with a small soft head

Tooth brush

  • Brush their teeth twice a day, once last thing at night before bed and at least one other time during the day
  • We would recommend brushing before breakfast if brushing is part of your family morning routine.
  • For up to three year olds use a smear of toothpaste containing 1000ppm fluoride
  • For three - six year olds use a pea size blob of toothpaste containing 1350 - 1500ppm fluoride
  • Brush their teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, encourage your child to spit out any excess toothpaste and not to rinse with lots of water
  • Use a timer as it is a good way to get your child use to brushing for two minutes

Egg timer

  • Supervise tooth-brushing up to the age of seven or eight. If your child brushes their own teeth ensure you watch them from time to time to ensure effective cleaning and that the child is brushing their teeth for at least two minutes
  • Wait for approximately an hour after brushing before giving your child food or a drink
  • Reduce the number of snacks in the day and avoid high sugar content foods, dried fruits including raisins and sultanas, fizzy drinks and flavoured water
  • Bring you child to regular dental appointments.
